Engineers FAQs What is Cover Engineer?

Cover Engineer is a cover-shift platform built for building services and facilities teams. Sites and FM providers can post short-term or planned cover requirements in minutes. Engineers on the network can one-click apply using their saved profile. Instead of chasing availability across calls and messages, you simply review the applicants in one place and select the engineer you want to book, based on skills, experience, location, and availability. It’s a cheaper, faster, clearer way to secure the right cover with less downtime, less admin and most importantly, less cost!!

How does it work?

Cover Engineer keeps cover hiring simple and transparent. A site uploads a shift with the essentials, when and where it is, what’s needed on-site, and the skills or tickets required. Engineers on the platform can then put themselves forward instantly with a one-click application tied to their profile. From there, the site can see everyone who’s applied in one dashboard, compares suitability at a glance, and confirm the engineer they want to take the shift.

Is Cover Engineer an agency?

No! Cover Engineer is not a recruitment agency. It’s a self-serve platform that connects sites needing cover with engineers available to work, allowing engineers to apply in one click and sites to choose who they want to book based on experience, skills and previous reviews.

Will I work directly for Cover Engineer?

No! You won’t be employed by Cover Engineer. Cover Engineer is a platform that matches engineers with sites needing cover. For all shifts booked through the platform, payment and employment are handled by our Umbrella partner, Clipper Contracting. Clipper will onboard you, manage timesheets, and pay you for the hours you work.

Are there any fees?

Cover Engineer doesn’t charge recruiter-style commission per booking. Instead, it’s a flat annual fee per site, typically less than the equivalent of two weeks’ worth of traditional recruitment agency fees per year.
Payment is then handled via Clipper Contracting, who charge £20 per invoice for their payroll services. This £20 fee is deducted from the engineer’s pay pre-tax (it isn’t added on top of your site invoice).

Do you offer referrals?

Yes. On your account page you’ll find your unique referral link. For every referral you bring to the platform, you’ll receive one free Clipper payment fee, worth £20!

Is there an early joining bonus?

Yes, for a limited time, all engineers who join Cover Engineer will receive 5 free Clipper payments (worth £100 total). This launch bonus is applied automatically, and the qualifying payments cover the Clipper fee on those invoices. Terms apply.

Who can join Cover Engineer?

Cover Engineer is open to building services and facilities engineers who are available to provide short-term cover on live sites. This includes engineers across core hard-services disciplines (mechanical, electrical, and multi-skilled), whether you’re looking for occasional shifts or regular cover work. You’ll need to complete a profile, onboarding and technical test so sites can quickly confirm your suitability before booking.

What types of shifts are posted on Cover Engineer?

Cover Engineer lists short-term and planned cover roles across building services and FM hard services. You’ll typically see ad-hoc sickness/holiday cover, last-minute emergency cover, planned maintenance support, and seasonal or peak-demand shifts. Shifts can range from single-day callouts to multi-day or weekly cover, and are commonly for mechanical, electrical, or multi-skilled engineers on commercial and managed sites.

How do bookings and confirmations work?

Once a site posts a shift, engineers can one-click apply. The site then reviews all applicants and selects the engineer they want to book. If you’re selected, you’ll receive a booking notification with the full shift details (time, location, access, and requirements). You confirm you’re available, complete any required onboarding steps, and the shift is then marked as confirmed so both you and the site have a clear record of the booking.

Can I cancel a shift after accepting?

Yes, but only if you genuinely need to, and you should cancel as early as possible. Once you’ve accepted a shift, the site is relying on you to keep their building covered. If something unavoidable comes up, cancel through the platform immediately so the site can repost the shift and secure alternative cover. Repeated late cancellations will affect your ability to be selected for future shifts and will result in suspension from the platform.

When and how do I get paid?

All shifts booked through Cover Engineer are paid via Clipper Contracting. After you complete the shift, you submit your hours/timesheet as required, the site approves it, and Clipper processes your payment through their umbrella payroll. You’ll be paid directly into your bank account in line with Clipper’s payroll schedule and any agreed cut-off times for approved timesheets.

Who is Clipper Contracting and what do they do?

Clipper Contracting Group is an umbrella payroll company that employs contractors on a PAYE basis and manages the pay process for temporary assignments. They handle onboarding, timesheets, PAYE tax and National Insurance, and issue your payslips. Once your hours are approved, they process and pay you through their payroll.

Are travel and parking covered?

No, travel time, mileage, and parking costs aren’t covered. Engineers are responsible for getting to and from site and paying any parking, tolls, or congestion/ULEZ charges unless a shift explicitly states otherwise.
